My daughter Evie is 9 years old. She was in public school for pre-K through second grade. Evie loved being in school because she is so social. The problem was that academically she was not successful. The time it took to process words (reading) and math did not fit with the way children are taught in schools. I asked for accommodations. The teachers said they would but never did. I asked for SPED testing and I was denied, even though she was at the bottom of the class in test scores.

Evie is a very smart little girl but the school system was failing her because they wouldn’t accommodate her needs. In third grade I decided to homeschool her, and in August we found out we got the UFA Scholarship! Through the money provided by the scholarship we were able to buy programs that would focus on her educational needs.

Being able to work with her one-on-one and giving her the time she needed to accomplish each task has allowed Evie to succeed. Her math skills are above grade level. Her reading has made great improvement, but even beyond the improvement she loves to read. The public classroom taught Evie how to sit and listen. It never taught her how and why to love learning. Through this scholarship we have been able to do deep dives into both social studies topics and science topics.

Now Evie loves learning. She wants to learn more and has more questions. It has been an amazing process to see education done right!
